Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) announced that OnDemand Ridesharing will be extended through January 2, 2027, in Chesapeake and Hampton. The microtransit pilot program was initially set to end in October but will now continue through the holiday season.

Service in Newport News will continue beyond January 2, according to HRT. OnDemand Ridesharing provides an affordable transportation option for those without vehicles and in areas with limited fixed-route bus service.

HRT’s OnDemand Ridesharing Extended in Chesapeake, Hampton

Service in Newport News will continue beyond new year

CHESAPEAKE and HAMPTON, Va.: OnDemand Ridesharing from Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will be extended through Jan. 2, 2027 in Chesapeake and Hampton.

Initially available through the end of October, the microtransit pilot program in Chesapeake and Hampton will now continue through the holiday season. OnDemand in those cities will then discontinue after Jan. 2.

Service in Newport News, now in its third year, will continue beyond Jan. 2.

OnDemand Ridesharing provides an affordable transportation option for those without vehicles and in areas with limited fixed-route bus service.

Fares are just $2 per person per ride, just like HRT’s other modes of transit. Free fares are offered for qualified Paratransit riders and Student Freedom Pass holders, though anyone riding with them must pay the fare. Paratransit and Student Freedom Pass riders must show proof of participation. Kids 17 and under ride free with a paying adult.

Service is available in the designated zone in each city Mondays through Fridays from 5 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m.-8 p.m., within about 15 minutes of your request.
